MacBook Battery Replacement: When to Do It and What It Costs in Sale, Manchester
Your MacBook goes everywhere with you. Work, coffee shops, the sofa. But after a couple of years, you might notice it doesn’t last as long between charges. Maybe it shuts down at 20%. Maybe the bottom of the case feels warmer than it used to.
These are signs your battery is on its way out. The good news? A MacBook battery replacement is one of the most straightforward repairs we do at PC Express in Sale, and it can give your laptop a whole new lease of life.
How to Check Your MacBook Battery Health
Before you book anything in, it’s worth checking where your battery actually stands. Apple makes this easy.
Click the Apple menu, then System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS). Go to Battery, then click Battery Health. You’ll see one of these:
- Normal means your battery is functioning as expected. No action needed.
- Service Recommended means the battery has degraded significantly and Apple recommends getting it replaced.
You can also check your cycle count. Every time you use and recharge your battery from 0% to 100%, that counts as one cycle. Most MacBooks are rated for around 1,000 cycles before the battery drops below 80% of its original capacity.
To check: hold Option and click the Apple menu, then choose System Information. Under Power, you’ll see your current cycle count and condition.
Signs Your MacBook Battery Needs Replacing
Sometimes the numbers tell the story. Other times, you just notice things aren’t right. Here are the common signs:
- Battery drains much faster than it used to, even with light use
- Your MacBook shuts down unexpectedly when the battery still shows charge
- The trackpad feels slightly raised or the bottom case bulges (this is a swollen battery and needs immediate attention)
- macOS shows “Service Recommended” in battery settings
- Your MacBook only works when plugged in
- It runs noticeably hotter than before, especially on the underside
If you spot a swollen battery, stop using the MacBook straight away and bring it in. A swollen battery can damage other components and, in rare cases, poses a safety risk.
How Much Does a MacBook Battery Replacement Cost?
Costs depend on the model. Here’s a rough guide for 2026:
- MacBook Air (2017-2019): £90 to £130
- MacBook Air (M1/M2/M3): £110 to £160
- MacBook Pro 13″ (2016-2019): £100 to £150
- MacBook Pro 14″/16″ (M1 Pro and later): £150 to £220
These are typical third-party repair prices. Apple’s own service tends to cost more, often £199 to £249 depending on the model. At PC Express, we use quality replacement cells and offer a warranty on the work.
For an accurate quote on your specific MacBook, pop in or give us a ring. We’ll check the model and battery condition and let you know exactly what it’ll cost.
How Long Does the Replacement Take?
Most MacBook battery replacements take between one and three hours, depending on the model. Older MacBook Airs with glued-in batteries can be a bit more involved, but the newer models with pull-tab adhesive are quicker.
We can usually turn it around same-day if you drop it off in the morning. If we need to order a specific battery for a less common model, it might take a day or two longer.
Is It Worth Replacing the Battery or Buying New?
This is the question everyone asks, and the answer depends on the age and condition of your MacBook.
If your MacBook is an M1 or later (2020 onwards), a battery replacement is almost always worth it. These machines are still powerful, run the latest macOS, and will be supported for years to come. Spending £120 to £180 on a new battery versus £1,000+ on a new MacBook is a no-brainer.
For Intel MacBooks (2019 and older), it depends. If the rest of the machine runs well and does everything you need, a new battery can give you another two to three years of use. If it’s already struggling with speed or can’t run the software you need, it might be time to upgrade.
We’re happy to give you an honest assessment. We’d rather tell you to save the money than charge you for a repair that doesn’t make sense.
Tips to Make Your New Battery Last Longer
Once you’ve got a fresh battery, a few habits can help it stay healthy for longer:
- Keep your MacBook updated. macOS includes battery optimisation features that learn your charging habits.
- Avoid leaving it plugged in at 100% all the time. If you use it at a desk, let it cycle down to around 40-50% before plugging back in.
- Don’t let it fully drain regularly. Lithium batteries prefer staying between 20% and 80%.
- Keep it cool. Excessive heat is the biggest enemy of battery longevity.
- Turn on “Optimised Battery Charging” in System Settings, which slows charging past 80% when it predicts you won’t need a full charge soon.
