Before you spend hundreds on a replacement, there are a few simple things worth checking first. 1. Your Storage Drive Might Be Full (or Failing)
A hard drive that’s over 90% full will grind your PC to a halt. Windows needs breathing room to manage temporary files, updates, and virtual memory. If your drive is nearly full, clearing out old files, emptying your recycle bin, and uninstalling programs you no longer use can make a noticeable difference.
Still running a traditional spinning hard drive? That’s likely the biggest bottleneck. Upgrading to an SSD (solid state drive) is the single best upgrade you can make to an older PC. 2. You Might Not Have Enough RAM
RAM is your computer’s short-term memory. If you’re running Windows 10 or 11 with only 4GB, your system is constantly swapping data to disk, which slows everything down. For everyday use, 8GB is the minimum you want. For anything more demanding, 16GB is the sweet spot.

3. Malware or Bloatware Is Eating Your Resources
Sometimes the problem isn’t your hardware at all. Background programs, browser extensions, and the occasional bit of malware can quietly consume your CPU and memory. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check what’s using the most resources. You might be surprised.
Pre-installed bloatware is another common culprit, especially on budget laptops. Manufacturers load them with trial software that runs at startup and drags performance down. A clean-up service can strip all of that out and give you back the speed you paid for.
4. Windows Needs a Service
Like a car, your operating system benefits from regular maintenance. Pending updates, corrupted system files, and fragmented drives (if you’re still on an HDD) all contribute to slowdowns.
