Spring Clean Your Tech: 7 Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Devices Running Fast

March is the perfect time to give your tech a proper spring clean. Just like your home, your PC, Mac, and phone need regular maintenance to stay fast and reliable. Here are seven simple maintenance tips you can do today to keep your devices running smoothly — and when it’s time to call in the professionals.

1. Clear Out the Digital Clutter

Over time, your PC or Mac accumulates temporary files, old downloads, and unused apps that slow everything down. On Windows, use Disk Cleanup or the built-in Storage Sense. On Mac, go to System Settings > General > Storage to see what’s eating your space.

Quick win: Empty your Downloads folder and Recycle Bin/Trash. You’d be surprised how many gigabytes are hiding there.

2. Update Everything

Outdated software is one of the biggest causes of slow performance and security vulnerabilities. Make sure your operating system, browsers, and apps are all up to date.

Windows: Settings > Windows Update
Mac: System Settings > General > Software Update
iPhone/iPad: Settings > General > Software Update
Android: Settings > System > System Update

3. Clean Your Hardware

4. Check Your Phone Battery Health

Phone batteries degrade over time. If your iPhone or Android phone isn’t lasting the day like it used to, check the battery health:

iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging
Android: Settings > Battery (or use AccuBattery app)

5. Back Up Your Data

Malware and adware can slow your PC to a crawl without you realising. Windows Defender is decent these days, but running an additional scan with Malwarebytes (free version) can catch things the built-in tools miss.

On Mac, while viruses are less common, they’re not impossible. Watch for unexpected pop-ups, browser redirects, or apps you don’t recognise.
